A Future Without Sickness—What the Bible Really Promises
Many people believe that relief from pain and illness will come in a heavenly afterlife. But the Bible offers a different hope—one that’s grounded in life on earth.
“But the meek will possess the earth, and they will find exquisite delight in the abundance of peace” (Psalm, 37:11)
“As for the heavens, they belong to Jehovah, but the earth he has given to the sons of men” (Psalm, 115:16)
This promise includes perfect health, lasting happiness, and eternal life in a paradise right here on earth.
Why Do We Get Sick and Die?
The Bible doesn’t just offer hope—it explains the root cause of sickness and how it will be removed.
The Real Cause of Sickness
Adam and Eve were created with perfect health.
“God saw all that he had made, and look! it was very good” (Genesis, 1:31)
“The Rock, perfect is his activity, for all his ways are justice” (Deuteronomy, 32:4)
They were meant to live forever. But when they chose to disobey God, their bodies became vulnerable.
“Cursed is the ground on your account. In pain you will eat its produce all the days of your life” (Genesis, 3:17–19)
By rejecting God, they lost their connection to the Source of life. They became imperfect. As a result, they got sick and died—just as God had warned.
“From every tree of the garden you may eat. But as for the tree of the knowledge of good and bad, you must not eat from it, for in the day you eat from it you will certainly die” (Genesis, 2:16–17)
“So all the days of Adam’s life amounted to 930 years, and then he died” (Genesis, 5:5)

“Their children—us— inherited this imperfection….. and yes, as we know, we all positively do die!“
“Through one man sin entered into the world and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because they had all sinned” (Romans, 5:12)
Even scientists today recognise that many illnesses are caused by inherited defects. One research group concluded:
“It is an inescapable biological reality that once the engine of life switches on, the body inevitably sows the seeds of its own destruction.”
Can Human Effort Solve It?
Science has made progress in treating disease. But the root cause of sickness remains unsolved. The Bible explains why:
“Do not put your trust in nobles, nor in the son of earthling man, to whom no salvation belongs” (Psalm, 146:3)
Thankfully, the Bible also says:
“The things impossible with men are possible with God” (Luke, 18:27)
Jehovah can remove the cause of sickness. He will heal every disease.
“He forgives all your errors and heals all your ailments” (Psalm, 103:3)
His Word promises:
“Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his peoples. And God himself will be with them. And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away” (Revelation, 21:3–4)
What You Can Do
Jesus clearly explained what we must do to enjoy this future:
“This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ” (John, 17:3)
The Bible contains the teachings of God and Jesus. This knowledge can help you now—and prepare you for a future without pain. God promises:
“No resident will say: ‘I am sick’” (Isaiah, 33:24)
A Balanced View of Health
The Bible teaches respect for life. Jehovah’s Witnesses show this by caring for their health. They avoid harmful habits like drug use and smoking. God expects his people to be moderate in eating and drinking.
“Do not be among those who drink too much wine, among those who gorge themselves on meat” (Proverbs, 23:20)
“Older men should be moderate in habits, serious, sound in mind, healthy in faith, in love, in endurance. Likewise, older women should be reverent in behaviour.” (Titus, 2:2–3)
Good habits—along with rest and exercise—can help prevent many illnesses. When needed, people should seek help from trustworthy health professionals.
The Bible also promotes balance and reasonableness.
“Let your reasonableness become known to all men.” (Philippians, 4:5)
“It trains us to reject ungodliness and worldly desires and to live with soundness of mind” (Titus, 2:12)
Some people become obsessed with finding cures and neglect their spiritual health. Others try risky treatments or waste money on remedies that don’t work.
Perfect health isn’t possible yet. But while we wait for the time when sickness will end, the Bible’s wisdom can help us stay balanced and hopeful.
