the gift of free will
To understand this matter properly, we must turn to God’s Word, the Bible. Why? It reveals that God created us with free will; that is, the capacity and freedom to make our own intelligent choices.

Differing Views on Free Will
Some people say free will does not exist and that every decision or action is set by God. Others believe real free will means complete and unlimited choice. These opinions raise strong feelings and spark debate.
What the Bible Tells Us
If we want to understand this subject, we turn to the Bible. The Scriptures show that God gave people free will. We have both the ability and the right to make our own decisions. God did not create us as people who follow a fixed script. Instead, He gave us the power to reason and choose.
“If serving God does not seem right to people, each of us must decide for ourselves today whom we will serve. Will we follow the gods our ancestors served across the river or the gods of the Amorites, whose country we now live in? As for us and our family, we will serve God.” (-Joshua 24:15)
The Limits of Freedom
The Bible helps us see how to use our freedom wisely. It asks us to consider how our choices fit with God’s standards. Freedom to choose does not mean we can do whatever we want without consequence. There are boundaries. Respecting these limits is part of living by God’s guidance.
“All things are lawful for me, but not all things are advantageous. All things are lawful for me, but I will not let myself be controlled by anything. (1 Corinthians 6:12)
Love Shown Through Choices
How we use our free will shows our love for God. When we choose actions that please Him, we express loyalty and respect. Our choices are proof of where our values lie.
“If you love me, you will observe my commandments.” – (John 14:15)
Respect for Others’ Decisions
We also need to recognise that other people have the right to make their own decisions. Respecting this right builds peace and trust in our communities.
Free will is both a gift and a responsibility. The way we use it shapes not only our lives but also our relationship with God and with those around us.
