Lest we forget
Behind every headline about war, there’s a silent human struggle that standard news reports miss. When conflict breaks out, millions flee their homes, carrying only what they can hold. Beyond the statistics, there’s a heavy emotional and physical weight borne by families forced into exile.
The Silent Crisis
When news cameras move on to the next breaking story, refugees remain in limbo. Survival isn’t just about escaping bullets; it’s about enduring the quiet hardship that follows. Many spend years, even decades, living in temporary shelters without proper healthcare, steady income, or clean water.
Children make up 39% of all refugees globally. They often miss out on schooling, carrying trauma that shapes their entire future. As the UN refugee agency chief noted, for too many refugees, displacement starts as a lifeline but lasts a lifetime.
Painful Reality
The sheer scale of human movement across the world remains staggering. Over 117 million people are currently displaced from their homes due to conflict, violence, or persecution. Around 65% of refugees seek safety in neighbouring countries, which are often struggling with their own economic hardships.
Mental health support is rarely available in makeshift camps. People deal with grief, anxiety, and the loss of their former lives in total isolation. They aren’t just figures in a report; they’re mothers, fathers, and young children trying to rebuild broken lives from scratch.
We can’t let their struggles become invisible. Recognising their pain is the very first step toward building real compassion and offering genuine support to those who need it most.
