What’s in a name

God tells us His personal name and makes it clear that He doesn’t share His praise or honour with graven images or idols, nor does He want us to.

What the Scriptures Show

In Isaiah 42:8, we see how important this name is:

“I am Jehovah. That is my name; I give my glory to no one else, nor my praise to graven images.“

Isaiah 42:8

Although the divine name appears nearly 7,000 times in the Hebrew-Aramaic Scriptures, many translators decided to take it upon themselves to replace it with the title LORD.

Why Using His Name Matters

It’s clear that God wants people all across the world to know Him by His real name. When we use it, we honour Him instead of replacing His identity with generic titles.

God invites people to know Him by name for their own good—it opens the door to a personal friendship with Him and the promise of eternal life. It makes perfect sense, then, why Jehovah desires us to share His name with others.
