A steady view of the earth’s future

An international group of researchers studying climate change reached a clear finding: the earth can cope with more than many people expected. For those who trust in a caring Creator, that fits with what we already see, the many self-repairing natural processes built into the planet.

However, human-caused harm has reached a serious level. Nature alone won’t undo every form of damage. Confidence about the earth’s long-term future rests on what the Bible says about God’s purpose for the planet.

Bible assurances that the earth will endure

The Bible states that God made the earth.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)

It also says the earth belongs to him.

“To Jehovah belong the earth and everything in it, The productive land and those dwelling in it.” (Psalm 24:1)

In addition, it describes the earth as securely established.

“He has established the earth on its foundations; It will not be moved from its place forever and ever.” (Psalm 104:5)

The Bible also explains that God formed the earth to be lived on, not left empty.

“For this is what Jehovah says, The Creator of the heavens, the true God, the One who formed the earth, its Maker who firmly established it, who did not create it simply for nothing, but formed it to be inhabited: ‘I am Jehovah, and there is no one else.'” (Isaiah 45:18)

It also promises a lasting future for those who do what is right.

“The righteous will possess the earth, And they will live forever on it.” (Psalm 37:29)

God will end environmental abuse

The earth includes systems that can support life when people act with sense and restraint. Still, the Bible also foretells that God will act against those who ruin the earth.

“But the nations became wrathful, and your own wrath came, and the appointed time for the dead to be judged, and to reward your slaves the prophets as well as the holy ones and those fearing your name, the small and the great, and to bring to ruin those ruining the earth.” (Revelation 11:18)

After that, the Bible points to a restored world where life can flourish, and God provides for every living thing.

“You open your hand And satisfy the desire of every living thing.” (Psalm 145:16)

God’s name in the Bible

The Bible identifies God’s personal name as Jehovah.

“May people know that you, whose name is Jehovah, You alone are the Most High over all the earth.” (Psalm 83:18)
