  • One aim of religion is to explain life's purpose. However, many people say their faith has not met their spiritual needs. Denise, raised Catholic, remembers a well-known catechism question about why God made humans. The answer focused on showing God's goodness and sharing everlasting happiness in heaven. That reply left her unsure about daily life. "It didn't give me a clear reason for why I'm here," Denise said. "If I'm just waiting to go to heaven, what should I do in the meantime?" Her experience is common. One survey reported that about two thirds of those interviewed felt most churches and synagogues do not help people find meaning in life. As a result, many look elsewhere for answers. Some turn to science, while others try schools of thought such as humanism, nihilism, or existentialism. Still, many keep searching and yet feel unsatisfied. Inherently Spiritual Dr Kevin S. Seybold describes "the seemingly universal tendency of humans to worship something". In recent years, some scientists have argued that people naturally look for deeper meaning. A few even suggest that genetics and other physical evidence hint at a built-in drive to connect with a higher power. Even so, most people don't need academic agreement to sense a spiritual need. Spirituality often stirs the big questions about why we exist and what we should do with our lives. It can also raise the thought of accountability to a powerful Creator. Careful attention to the natural world can shape how people think about these issues. For example, nature shows striking order and complexity, from single-celled life to vast groups of galaxies. For many, that scale and detail points to an intelligent Designer. Satisfy Your Spiritual Need The Bible describes humans as having a sense of "eternity" in their minds. In other words, many people feel an inner pull towards lasting life and lasting meaning. They want answers, and they keep asking because searching is part of being human. Even with major advances in science and technology, the deeper questions remain. An editor at The Wall Street Journal summed it up by saying people still ask who they are, why they exist, and where they are going. So it makes sense to look for answers from the most reliable source. The Bible presents God as our Maker, not a distant observer. Many believe that the One behind creation is best placed to meet our spiritual needs. Jesus Christ directed attention to the Creator as the true source of life, and he linked real happiness with spiritual hunger and a desire for what is right. A clear answer to the question of why we are here helps bring peace of mind and direction. Consider, then, the Creator's view of life's purpose, and what it means for everyday living.
