tougher than we thought
“The earth can cope better than we once assumed.”
That was the view of an international research team studying climate change. For those who believe in a Creator who cares for mankind, that conclusion fits well with the many self-healing natural processes built into the earth.
Still, the harm caused by human activity has been severe. Natural systems alone can’t undo every form of damage. The Bible gives clear reasons to trust that God will act so the earth will survive and flourish.
The earth belongs to God and has a secure future
The Bible states that God created our planet.
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis, 1, 1)
It also says that God owns the earth and all that is on it.
“To Jehovah belong the earth and everything in it” (Psalm 24:1).
In addition, the Bible describes the earth as stable and enduring.
“He has established the earth on its foundations; It will not be moved from its place forever and ever” (Psalm 104:5).
Life on earth will continue, and people will thrive
God did not make the earth to be empty or pointless; he formed it to support life.
“This is what Jehovah says, The Creator of the heavens, the true God, the One who formed the earth, its Maker who firmly established it, who did not create it simply for nothing, but formed it to be inhabited, ‘I am Jehovah, and there is no one else.'” ,(Isaiah, 45, 18)
The Bible also promises a lasting future for righteous people on earth.
“The righteous will possess the earth, And they will live forever on it” (Psalm 37:29).
God will end the abuse of the planet
The earth has systems that can recover when people act with care. However, Scripture also warns that God will step in to stop the exploitation that has harmed the planet.
“But the nations became wrathful, and your own wrath came, and the appointed time came for the dead to be judged and to reward your slaves the prophets as well as the holy ones and those fearing your name, the small and the great, and to bring to ruin those ruining the earth” (Revelation, 11, 18)
After that, the Bible says God will restore the earth to health and beauty, providing fully for every living thing.
“You open your hand And satisfy the desire of every living thing” (Psalm 145:16).
A note about God’s name
The Bible explains that Jehovah is God’s personal name.
“May people know that you, whose name is Jehovah, You alone are the Most High over all the earth” (Psalm 83:18).
