wildfires

Wildfires are no joke. Over 4.5 million acres burned in the US in 2022, which is the size of Wales times three. Heatwaves, wind and drought make them worse, turning dry forests into tinderboxes. Australia’s Black Summer in 2019–2020 released 715 million tonnes of CO2 – more than the country’s annual emissions.

Human carelessness causes 85% of wildfires, whether it’s a campfire gone rogue or a carelessly flicked cigarette. And here’s the kicker – wildfire seasons are getting longer. Wildfires used to stick to summer, but now some fires rage year-round. It’s nature fighting back hard, and it’s not afraid.
