God crafted the earth in perfect harmony.

a perfect world

the perfect earth

The Bible opens with the well-known words, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” With that simple and powerful statement, it reveals the One at the centre of the whole Bible, the almighty God, Jehovah. After creating the heavens and the earth, God prepared the world in what was described figuratively as days. During these days, he brought order, beauty, and life to the earth. As a result, the natural world came into being in all its variety and richness.

The Creation of Man and Woman

Among all of God’s earthly creations, man held a superior position. God made man in his own image, which meant he could reflect qualities such as love, wisdom, and justice. God formed him from the dust of the ground and named him Adam. Then he placed Adam in a paradise called the garden of Eden. God himself planted this garden and filled it with trees that were both beautiful and fruitful.

Yet Adam was not meant to live alone. So God made a woman from one of Adam’s ribs and brought her to him as his wife. Later, she was named Eve. Adam warmly accepted her, recognising that she was truly part of him. In this way, God established marriage, showing that a man and a woman were to be united as one.

What a lovely home it was. With people and animals living in peace with each other, and with their heavenly Creator, everything was complete. Surely, you would love to live in such a paradise of joy.

Life in Eden

God gave Adam and Eve a life of peace, purpose, and happiness. They lived in a perfect home and enjoyed a close relationship with their Creator. They had meaningful work, a beautiful place to live, and the prospect of filling the earth with their children. Nothing was lacking. Everything God had made was good, clean, and complete.

The Commands Given to the First Human Pair

God gave the first man and woman two clear instructions. First, they were to care for the earth and cultivate their garden home. In time, they were also to fill the earth with their offspring. Second, they were forbidden to eat from one specific tree, the tree of the knowledge of good and bad. God warned that if they disobeyed, they would die.

These commands gave Adam and Eve the chance to show that they accepted God’s rule. Their obedience would also prove their love, trust, and gratitude. Since God had given them everything they needed, they had every reason to follow his direction. They were perfect, and their life in Eden reflected the goodness of all that God had made.

The Divine Name

The Holy Scriptures use several titles for God, including Creator and Almighty God. These titles draw attention to his qualities, such as holiness, power, justice, wisdom, and love. Yet God also has a personal name, Jehovah.

And finally…

“. . . . And God himself will be with them. And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and  death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore.”
—Revelation 21 : 1-4.
