To know what lies ahead is to gain power over it. Seeing the future allows us to prepare today to secure better outcomes tomorrow.

Consider a simple, everyday scenario… forecasting the weather. Former American President Lyndon Johnson once noted that if weather predictions were accurate just five days in advance, it could save the country six billion dollars annually. More importantly, early warnings save lives.

Beyond the weather, anticipating what comes next is critical across many areas of life. Humanity faces urgent challenges regarding the environment, society, military conflicts, and the economy. Yet, how successful have so-called visionaries been at predicting what will happen?

Humanity’s Struggle with Predictions

Efforts to foresee the future have never been lacking. One famous figure widely credited with predicting future events is Nostradamus, a 16th-century French physician and astrologer. But were his claims truly accurate?

Examine one of his famous passages…

When the fork is supported by two pillars, With six half-horns and six open scissors… The very potent Lord, heir to the throne, will then subjugate to himself the entire world.

Does this sound like a clear forecast you can rely on? Is it even understandable? Because Nostradamus provided no explanation, a modern follower, Henry James Foman, interpreted it this way…

The first two lines indicate a date. When the fork, V, is sustained by two pillars, they make an M, the Roman numeral for one thousand. Six half-horns are CCCCCC, the numeral for six hundred; six open scissors, XXXXXX, make sixty. In other words, in 1660 the great Lord of France, heir to the Merovingians​—whose emblem was the toad . . .​—will be the greatest monarch in the world. . . . In 1660 Louis XIV married Maria Theresa of Spain . . . Early in 1661 . . . Louis, at twenty-two, became the virtual autocrat of France, the Grand Monarque of the civilised world.

Reflecting on this complex explanation, one candid commentator noted…

That isn’t exactly what Nostradamus said, but then again, who knows what he meant?

Most scholars share this scepticism. A. C. Keller of the University of Washington pointed out that Nostradamus’s statements are vague and open to countless interpretations, demonstrating that he didn’t accurately foresee what was to come.

In more modern times, prominent political leaders have made bold assertions that functioned like predictions. Yet these, too, failed. President Woodrow Wilson claimed that the First World War would bring lasting peace, safety, and freedom to all nations. Just over two decades later, Adolf Hitler proved him wrong by starting the Second World War.

Hitler made his own confident prediction at Nuremberg in 1934…

The German form of life is definitely determined for the next thousand years. . . . There will be no other revolution in Germany for the next one thousand years!

How accurate was that vision? William Shirer, an eyewitness to the speech, later wrote…

After twelve years, four months and eight days . . . the Thousand-Year Reich had come to an end . . . it had dissolved with a suddenness and a completeness that had few, if any, parallels in history.

Neither Wilson nor Hitler could reliably foresee the future. In truth, no human can do so on their own.

Why Human Forecasting Fails

First, people rarely have access to all relevant facts. Second, even when data is available, interpreting it correctly presents a huge obstacle.

Weather forecasting illustrates this problem well. Factors like heat, atmospheric pressure, wind, and terrain interact in complex ways. Even when meteorologists understand these elements, predicting their precise interaction remains difficult. That’s why forecasters are often wrong.

Predicting human history is vastly more complex. Political analysts attempting to forecast world developments are often compared to chess players. A chessboard has only 64 squares and 32 pieces, making it seem straightforward. Yet the possible moves are staggering… 10^120 (10 to the 120th power) or, written numerically,(1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) … wooaw, a number that far exceeds the mathematical power of any conceivable system!

So, if a computer can’t calculate every outcome on a simple chessboard, how can humans be expected to predict complex global affairs? Global challenges aren’t confined to 64 squares. They involve countless variables, the most unpredictable of which is human free will.

Historian Arnold Toynbee observed…

I myself believe that prediction is not possible in the field of human affairs. I believe that the outcomes of human choices, purposes, and plans are intrinsically unpredictable, however fully we may be informed about the relevant past facts up-to-date.

When a single variable changes unexpectedly on the global stage, an entire prediction crumbles. Karl Marx expected a socialist revolution to break out in 19th-century Britain based on industrial conditions. However, the introduction of labour rights and social reform changed the landscape. Marx failed to foresee these human-led adjustments. Today, unpredictable political decisions and public unrest make human behaviour even harder to forecast.

Divine Foresight

Can God predict what lies ahead? Not only does the Creator possess this ability, but he chooses to share key insights with humanity out of love and purpose.

It wouldn’t make sense for God to leave people in total darkness regarding major global shifts. Beyond love, revealing the future demonstrates divine authority. The true God should easily be able to state his intention before it happens. As recorded in the scriptures…

” 9 Remember the former things of long ago, That I am God, and there is no other. I am God, and there is no one like me. 10 From the beginning I foretell the outcome, And from long ago the things that have not yet been done. I say, ‘My decision will stand, And I will do whatever I please.’

Isaiah 46:9,10

When these predictions come to pass, they prove God’s authority and show active involvement in human history.

This foresight has been demonstrated repeatedly. Long before the fall of Judah and the 70-year exile in Babylon, those events were foretold. The eventual downfall of Babylon was also foretold, even naming the Persian conqueror, Cyrus, more than a century before his birth.

God’s intentions don’t rely on unpredictable human choices or hidden spiritual forces. While unseen forces might steer nations toward destructive conflicts like Armageddon, God remains in control. This stands in stark contrast to political figures who promise lasting peace through human effort alone.

How Inspired Predictions Differ

Although humans were used to write biblical prophecies, the messages didn’t originate from human reasoning. The apostle Peter explained that no scripture prophecy comes from personal interpretation, as writers were guided by the Holy Spirit.

While biblical writers like Daniel used symbolic language… such as a two-horned ram defeated by a goat… the meanings weren’t left to guesswork. Daniel directly clarified that the ram represented Media and Persia, while the goat represented the king of Greece, pointing directly to Alexander the Great two centuries before his conquests.

Other symbolic prophecies are explained elsewhere within the scriptures themselves. While effort is required to understand them, the answers remain grounded within the text, unlike the vague writings of secular astrologers.

Predictions for modern times

Jesus made key predictions regarding future times. Decades in advance, careful study of his statements alongside writings from Daniel and John pointed to 1914 as a major turning point marking the beginning of the end for the current world order.

It was foretold that within a single generation, widespread war, food shortages, disease, and social instability would occur.

Was the world expecting such turmoil around 1914? Historical records show the opposite. The preceding decades were among the most peaceful in European history, filled with optimism about continuous progress. Historians note that no major power actively planned for a world-spanning conflict in the summer of 1914. Yet, global war erupted unexpectedly, followed by severe food crises and health epidemics, exactly as the Bible described!

Jesus also predicted that during this period, true Christian practices would be restored after a long period of decline. While many mainstream institutions have moved away from traditional values, Jehovah’s Witnesses continue to preach the message of God’s Kingdom globally, mirroring the activities and standards of early Christian communities.

Evidence shows that the ultimate authority over the future has outlined his purpose clearly. Gaining an understanding of these insights offers practical guidance and real hope for what lies ahead.
