finding your bearings

Life doesn’t come with a standard road map, but believe it or not, it does have a reliable guide. Believe you me, the Bible is our operator’s manual for life given to us by God, our creator. Just as a manufacturer includes a handbook with a complex machine to keep it running smoothly, our maker gave us the Scriptures to help us navigate the twists and turns of daily existence.

Timeless Wisdom for Daily Decisions

When you look closely at its pages, the Bible isn’t just an ancient religious text… it’s a practical toolkit. It offers clear advice on relationships, finances, stress, and personal integrity. Around 100% of the challenges we face today mirror the struggles people experienced thousands of years ago. By following its principles, people can avoid common pitfalls and find steady guidance in an uncertain world. As Psalm 119:105 reminds us, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”

Purpose and Peace in a Busy World

Beyond simple advice, this manual answers life’s biggest questions about purpose and hope. It reminds us that we aren’t alone on this journey. In a fast-paced world where standard answers often fall short, Scripture provides a solid foundation built on faith, forgiveness, and love. When you treat it as your daily guide, you don’t just survive… you learn how to truly live with confidence and peace.

Not everyone is bad

Negative human behaviours can be categorised into a comprehensive spectrum—ranging from everyday interpersonal flaws to global systemic destruction:

1. Interpersonal and Social Harms (Harm to Others)

These are actions that individuals inflict upon one another, driven by anger, jealousy, greed, fear, or a lack of empathy:

  • Direct Violence and Cruelty: Physical assault, murder, torture, domestic abuse, sexual violence, child exploitation, and warfare.
  • Deception and Betrayal: Lying, cheating, fraud, breaking promises, infidelity, and psychological manipulation (gaslighting).
  • Social Cruelty: Bullying, gossiping, public shaming, discrimination (racism, sexism, xenophobia), exclusion, and intentional humiliation.
  • Petty Annoyances and Disrespect: Interrupting others, being chronically late, chewing loudly, failing to listen, and general selfishness or lack of situational awareness in public spaces.
2. Systemic and Institutional Evils (Harm at Scale)

When human behaviours organise into societies, economies, and governments, individual flaws scale into large-scale devastation:

  • Oppression and Exploitation: Slavery, human trafficking, apartheid, political corruption, tyranny, and the abuse of power.
  • Economic Injustice: Exploitative labour practices, extreme wealth hoarding while others starve, and corporate greed that prioritises profit over human life.
  • Mass Conflict: Imperialism, ethnic cleansing, terrorism, and the development and stockpiling of weapons of mass destruction (nuclear, chemical, and biological).
3. Environmental and Ecological Destruction (Harm to the Planet)

Humans are uniquely capable of altering and damaging the biosphere that sustains them:

  • Climate Change and Pollution: Emitting massive amounts of greenhouse gases, dumping toxic waste into oceans and rivers, and polluting the air.
  • Habitat Destruction: Deforestation, overfishing, industrial agriculture, and driving countless species to extinction through sheer expansion and resource consumption.
  • Resource Depletion: Overpopulating, overconsuming, depleting fresh water tables, and leaving vast landscapes barren for short-term gain.
4. Self-Destructive Behaviors (Harm to Self)

Humans frequently act against their own best long-term interests, often due to stress, trauma, or biological impulses:

  • Substance Abuse: Addiction to alcohol, nicotine, and hard drugs that ruin physical and mental health.
  • Neglecting Health: Eating chronic junk food, sleep deprivation, avoiding exercise, and ignoring mental health warning signs.
  • Self-Sabotage: Procrastination, negative self-talk, compulsive gambling, and staying in toxic or abusive environments.
5. Psychological and Cognitive Failures (The Root of the Actions)

Underlying all bad actions are the inherent cognitive and emotional shortcomings of the human mind:

  • Apathy and Inaction: Choosing to look away from suffering, ignoring systemic injustice, or failing to help when one has the power to do so (the bystander effect).
  • Biases and Dehumanisation: Believing one’s own group is inherently superior, viewing outsiders as “less than human”, confirmation bias, and tribalism.
  • Short-Term Thinking: Valuing immediate gratification or comfort over the long-term survival and harmony of the community or planet.
