is the UN successful?

While the United Nations (UN) has successfully mediated dozens of conflicts in places like Cambodia, El Salvador, and Mozambique, it faces significant criticism for systemic failures that prevent it from maintaining global peace. Critics point to a record high of 61 active conflicts in 2024—the most since 1946—as evidence of its declining effectiveness.

Major Humanitarian and Peacekeeping Failures

The UN’s history is marked by high-profile instances where it failed to prevent mass atrocities despite having a presence on the ground—

  • Rwanda (1994)— The UN Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR) failed to stop the genocide that killed approximately 800,000 to 1 million people in just 100 days. Warnings of stockpiled weapons were unheeded by the Security Council.
  • Srebrenica (1995)— Despite being declared a UN “safe area”, over 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were massacred by Serb forces while lightly armed Dutch peacekeepers were unable to intervene.
  • Darfur (2003–Present)— Over 200,000 people have been killed and 2.5 million displaced. The joint AU-UN mission (UNAMID) was criticised for failing to stop attacks and eventually withdrew in 2020, leaving a security vacuum.
  • South Sudan (2013–Present)— At least 382,000 people have died in civil war, with over 14,500 peacekeepers unable to prevent the humanitarian crisis or the displacement of 4.3 million people.
  • Haiti (2004–2017)— Beyond failing to advance democratic governance, the MINUSTAH mission was implicated in human rights violations and its troops caused a cholera epidemic that killed over 8,000 people.

Systemic Limitations and Statistics

The UN’s ability to act is often paralysed by its own internal structure and financial instability—

CategoryKey Statistics
Active Conflicts61 active conflicts in 2024— the highest number since WWII.
Security Council VetoThe veto has been used over 300 times by the P5 to block resolutions, often for national strategic interests.
Budget CrisisAs of late 2025, Member States owed the UN $1.8 billion for the regular budget and $3.7 billion for peacekeeping.
Human CostMore than 4,400 peacekeepers have died while serving under the UN flag.
Global DisplacementAn estimated 120 million people are currently displaced worldwide due to conflict and persecution.

Current Conflict Stalemate

In contemporary crises like Ukraine and Gaza, the UN has been largely sidelined. In Gaza, the General Assembly voted 153 to 10 for a ceasefire, but the Security Council remained deadlocked due to vetoes. Similarly, Russian vetoes have prevented decisive action regarding the invasion of Ukraine.

Most people trust governments to keep order, protect lives, and hold society together. That’s easy to understand. When fear grows, people want strong leaders, clear rules, and quick action. Still, history shows the same pattern. Governments can control some problems for a while, but they can’t bring lasting peace. War returns, injustice remains, and trust…
