living in the last days

are we living in the last days?

The phrase “critical times hard to deal with” in 2 Timothy 3:1 comes from the Greek kairoi chalepoi, meaning fierce, dangerous, and harsh. One scholar describes it as a “tremendous assault of evil.” Earlier generations faced trouble, but the Bible says the last days would be far more severe. As 2 Timothy 3:13 notes, “wicked men and impostors will advance from bad to worse.”

Evidence in our time

2 Timothy 3:2‑5 lists attitudes that would mark this period, and they match exactly what we are seeing today.

  • Fraud and corruption are widespread. Reports describe massive economic crime, and some public figures who exploit systems are even admired. Dishonesty is often celebrated rather than condemned.
  • Pride and contempt show in racial hatred and prejudice. News reports highlight rising hostility toward minorities across many nations, with vandalism, threats, and violence becoming more common.
  • Many families struggle with disrespect and rebellion. Teachers say even very young children answer back, and classroom behaviour often overshadows learning. Not all youths act this way, but the trend reflects the warning in Scripture.
  • Family love has weakened. Domestic violence remains a major cause of harm, and many victims suffer at the hands of relatives. High divorce rates, neglect of the elderly, and widespread mistreatment of children all point to a decline in natural affection.
  • Some young people commit violence with little motive, and moral boundaries seem blurred. Even parents sometimes excuse harmful behaviour rather than correct it.
  • Entertainment dominates modern life. Young people often spend far more time with media than with family or faith, and the loudest influences are rarely spiritual ones.
  • Religion is common, but genuine transformation is rare. Some of the worst abuses have occurred under a religious façade, exposing hypocrisy rather than true devotion.

These traits—along with selfishness, ingratitude, disloyalty, slander, lack of self‑control, and pride—fit the Bible’s description of the last days!
