The World Feels Like It’s Falling Apart
The world trembles under threats of nuclear fire and economic decline, yet these are not the deepest dangers facing civilisation. Long before modern weapons existed, entire nations crumbled while their markets still traded and their armies still marched. Their downfall came from within… a slow poisoning of conscience, a quiet erosion of decency, a moral sickness that hollowed them out until the slightest pressure brought them crashing down.
And now the same symptoms spread across our own age, as if history itself were raising its voice to warn us. The question is no longer whether the world is shaking, but whether its foundations have already rotted beneath our feet.
Reports from every direction suggest that the decay is real. But people are not powerless. Jehovah’s Witnesses have long pointed to God’s Kingdom as the only lasting cure, yet those who choose to live under its standards now can resist the corruption that stains the world. The scriptures below reveal how God sees the age we live in, and how people can keep their hearts from being shaped by the same darkness.
Preserve the Family
Child‑care specialists from seventeen nations gathered to sound an alarm. They pleaded for society to strengthen the family, calling it the most vital human institution. Their warning was not academic. Marriage and divorce now stand almost side by side, cohabitation rises sharply, and many children enter the world without the shelter of a stable home. The result is a generation growing up without the deep roots that once held families firm against hardship and fear.
At that same gathering, a professor from a London university warned that many parents, overwhelmed and exhausted, have begun “parking” their children in day‑care centres or before glowing screens. He said this has produced adults who never learnt how to nurture, how to guide, how to love with steadiness. The family, once the hearth of warmth and wisdom, flickers like a lamp running out of oil.
“Has one found a good wife? One has found a good thing…”
(Proverbs 18…22)
“Let marriage be honourable among all…”
(Hebrews 13…4)
“Continue putting up with one another and forgiving one another freely…”
(Colossians 3…13–14)
“Train up a boy according to the way for him…”
(Proverbs 22…6)
Abuse of Children… A Sign of a Darkened Age
Few signs of moral collapse are more chilling than the cruelty inflicted on children. Reports tell of a mother who scalded her daughter to death over a trivial mistake she made, and another who struck her infant so violently that the child will never live independently.
Public figures—including leading Catholic figures—have been exposed for abusing minors, and even school staff have harmed the children entrusted to them. These horrors are not rare. Millions of children in the United States alone are abused or neglected each year, and thousands die as a direct result.
A director of a treatment programme remarked that if the same number of children were struck by a mysterious disease, the world would declare a state of emergency. Yet because the wounds come from within homes and communities, society looks away. This is not merely a social problem… it is a spiritual sickness, a sign of a world losing its humanity.
“Put them all away from you… wrath, anger, badness…”
(Colossians 3…8–10)
“You fathers, do not be irritating your children…”
(Ephesians 6…4)
“Let fornication and uncleanness of every sort… not even be mentioned…”
(Ephesians 5…3)
“The Devil’s Strategy”… A Warning for the Last Days
A well‑known psychology professor warned that as work invades the home and people scatter into isolated routines, human connection withers. He described this as part of a larger strategy… a force that trivialises life, numbs the heart, and convinces people that their loneliness is merely the cost of modern living. Yet the consequences are deadly. Isolation feeds depression, paranoia, violence, and even physical illness. It is not simply a social trend… it is a spiritual battlefield.
“One isolating himself will seek his own selfish longing…”
(Proverbs 18…1)
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition…”
(Philippians 2…3–4)
“This is my commandment… that you love one another…”
(John 15…12)
A Dog‑Eat‑Dog World… The Harvest of Greed
Cynicism spreads like smoke across the world. Ruthless business practices, corrupt politics, and rising crime reveal a society losing its moral compass. Crime grows more violent, more widespread, and more deeply rooted. Dishonesty is not limited to criminals… in one European country, employee theft drains hundreds of millions of pounds from taxpayers.
Tax evasion has reached staggering levels, and one investigator remarked that cheating has become a ‘common pastime‘. When greed becomes normal, justice becomes rare.
“Let the stealer steal no more…”
(Ephesians 4…28)
“Neither thieves… nor greedy persons… will inherit God’s Kingdom.”
(1 Corinthians 6…9–10)
“Render to all their dues… to him who calls for the tax, the tax.”
(Romans 13…1, 7)
“Those who are determined to be rich fall into temptation…”
(1 Timothy 6…9)
When Ideals Are Lost… Compassion Grows Cold
When a society loses its ideals, its heart grows numb. For example, a woman collapsed on a busy street, and a passer-by fought to revive her again and again. Yet for nearly an hour, hundreds of drivers passed without stopping. Doctors later said she might have lived if help had come sooner.
In another case, a distressed young woman threatened to harm herself outside a church. Instead of compassion, onlookers mocked her and urged her on. These are not isolated events… they are symptoms of a world where love has grown cold.
“Where there is no vision the people go unrestrained…”
(Proverbs 29…18)
“All things… that you want men to do to you…”
(Matthew 7…12)
“What sort of persons ought you to be… in holy acts of conduct…”
(2 Peter 3…11)
A Sign of the Times… The Kingdom Draws Near
The Bible foretold that the last days would be marked by moral collapse, cruelty, greed, and lovelessness. These conditions are not random… they are signs. They point to the nearness of God’s Kingdom, the government that will sweep away the present world and replace it with a righteous and stable rule. Under Christ, the earth will be filled with peace, justice, and knowledge, reaching every corner of creation.
“He will have subjects from sea to sea…”
(Psalm 72…8)
If the world’s moral decay troubles you, the Bible offers hope. You can resist the corruption of this age, and you can look forward to a time when the earth will be free from violence and cruelty. Jehovah’s Witnesses are ready to help anyone who wants to understand these promises more clearly.
